Let $G$ be a compact connected Lie group, and $M$ a compact Hamiltonian $G$-space, with moment map $J$. For each $G$-equivariant Hermitian vector bundle $E$ over $M$, one has an associated twisted Spin-C Dirac operator, whose equivariant index is a symplectic invariant of $E$. In the present paper, we study gluing properties of the equivariant index under "symplectic cutting" operations. Our main application is a proof of the Guillemin-Sternberg conjecture, which says that if $E=L$ is...

Consider a compact prequantizable symplectic manifold M on which a compact Lie group G acts in a Hamiltonian fashion. The ``quantization commutes with reduction'' theorem asserts that the G-invariant part of the equivariant index of M is equal to the Riemann-Roch number of the symplectic quotient of M, provided the quotient is nonsingular. We extend this result to singular symplectic quotients, using partial desingularizations of the symplectic quotient to define its Riemann-Roch number. By...

We calculate the dynamic structure function of two-dimensional liquid $^4$He at zero temperature employing a quantitative multi-particle fluctuations approach up to infinite order. We observe a behavior that is qualitatively similar to the phonon-maxon-roton-curve in 3D, including a Pitaevskii plateau (L. P. Pitaevskii, Sov. Phys. JETP 9, 830 (1959)). Slightly below the liquid-solid phase transition, a second weak roton-like excitation evolves below the plateau.

This article is from Journal of Proteomics , volume 100 . Abstract Clostridial collagenases are among the most efficient degraders of collagen. Most clostridia are saprophytes and secrete proteases to utilize proteins in their environment as carbon sources; during anaerobic infections, collagenases play a crucial role in host colonization. Several medical and biotechnological applications have emerged utilizing their high collagenolytic efficiency. However, the contribution of the functionally...

Abstract Animal models mimicking human diseases have been used extensively to study the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases and the efficacy of potential therapeutics. The chromatic number $\chi((G,\sigma))$ of a signed graph $(G,\sigma)$ is the smallest number $k$ for which there is a function $c : V(G) \rightarrow \mathbb{Z}_k$ such that $c(v) \not= \sigma(e) c(w)$ for every edge $e = vw$. Let $\Sigma(G)$ be the set of all signatures of $G$. We study the chromatic spectrum $\Sigma_{\chi}(G) = \{\chi((G,\sigma))\colon\ \sigma \in \Sigma(G)\}$ of $(G,\sigma)$. Let $M_{\chi}(G) = \max\{\chi((G,\sigma))\colon\ \sigma \in \Sigma(G)\}$, and $m_{\chi}(G) =...

According to the Weinstein splitting theorem, any Poisson manifold is locally, near any given point, a product of a symplectic manifold with another Poisson manifold whose Poisson structure vanishes at the point. Similar splitting results are known e.g. for Lie algebroids, Dirac structures and generalized complex structures. In this paper, we develop a novel approach towards these results that leads to various generalizations, including their equivariant versions as well as their formulations...

The only open case of Vizing's conjecture that every planar graph with $\Delta\geq 6$ is a class 1 graph is $\Delta = 6$. We give a short proof of the following statement: there is no 6-critical plane graph $G$, such that every vertex of $G$ is incident to at most three 3-faces. A stronger statement without restriction to critical graphs is stated in \cite{Wang_Xu_2013}. However, the proof given there works only for critical graphs. Furthermore, we show that every 5-critical plane graph has a...

In 1965, Vizing conjectured that the independence ratio of edge-chromatic critical graphs is at most $\frac{1}{2}$. We prove that for every $\epsilon > 0$ this conjecture is equivalent to its restriction on a specific set of edge-chromatic critical graphs with independence ratio smaller than $\frac{1}{2} + \epsilon$.

Recursive Marginal Quantization (RMQ) allows fast approximation of solutions to stochastic differential equations in one-dimension. When applied to two factor models, RMQ is inefficient due to the fact that the optimization problem is usually performed using stochastic methods, e.g., Lloyd's algorithm or Competitive Learning Vector Quantization. In this paper, a new algorithm is proposed that allows RMQ to be applied to two-factor stochastic volatility models, which retains the efficiency of...

The Van Est homomorphism for a Lie groupoid $G \rightrightarrows M$, as introduced by Weinstein-Xu, is a cochain map from the complex $C^\infty(BG)$ of groupoid cochains to the Chevalley-Eilenberg complex $C(A)$ of the Lie algebroid $A$ of $G$. It was generalized by Weinstein, Mehta, and Abad-Crainic to a morphism from the Bott-Shulman-Stasheff complex $\Omega(BG)$ to a (suitably defined) Weil algebra $W(A)$. In this paper, we will give an approach to the Van Est map in terms of the...

Abstract We report here the 79,263-bp plasmid pVv01 isolated from Vibrio vulnificus. pVv01 is closely related to the Vibrio plasmid p0908 and shows some similarities to phage P1. Unlike p0908, pVv01 represents an intact prophage inducible by mitomycin C. PVv01 phage particles revealed a myoviridal morphology and lytic activity.

Catastrophe risk is a major threat faced by individuals, companies, and entire economies. Catastrophe (CAT) bonds have emerged as a method to offset this risk and a corresponding literature has developed that attempts to provide a market-consistent pricing methodology for these and other long-dated, insurance-type contracts. This paper aims to unify and generalize several of the widely-used pricing approaches for long-dated contracts with a focus on stylized CAT bonds and market-consistent...

Tutte's 5-Flow Conjecture from 1954 states that every bridgeless graph has a nowhere-zero 5-flow. In 2004, Kochol proved that the conjecture is equivalent to its restriction on cyclically 6-edge connected cubic graphs. We prove that every cyclically 6-edge-connected cubic graph with oddness at most 4 has a nowhere-zero 5-flow.

We semiclassically investigate Schwinger pair production for pulsed rotating electric fields depending on time. To do so we solve the Dirac equation for two-component fields in a WKB-like approximation. The result shows that for two-component fields the spin distribution of produced pairs is generally not $1:1$. As a result the pair creation rates of spinor and scalar quantum electro dynamics (QED) are different even for one pair of turning points. For rotating electric fields the pair creation...

Let G be a connected Lie group with Lie algebra g. The Duflo map is a vector space isomorphism between the symmetric algebra S(g) and the universal enveloping algebra U(g) which, as proved by Duflo, restricts to a ring isomorphism from invariant polynomials onto the center of the universal enveloping algebra. The Duflo map extends to a linear map from compactly supported distributions on the Lie algebra g to compactly supported distributions on the Lie group G, which is a ring homomorphism for...

This article summarizes joint work with A. Alekseev (Geneva) on the Duflo isomorphism for quadratic Lie algebras. We describe a certain quantization map for Weil algebras, generalizing both the Duflo map and the quantization map for Clifford algebras. In this context, Duflo's theorem generalizes to a statement in equivariant cohomology.

We develop a theory of "quasi"-Hamiltonian G-spaces for which the moment map takes values in the group G itself rather than in the dual of the Lie algebra. The theory includes counterparts of Hamiltonian reductions, the Guillemin-Sternberg symplectic cross-section theorem and of convexity properties of the moment map. As an application we obtain moduli spaces of flat connections on an oriented compact 2-manifold with boundary as quasi-Hamiltonian quotients of the space G^2 x ... x G^2.
